Kay Ann Clayton, 76, of Wilmington, N.C.

Kay Ann Clayton, age 76, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, July 26, 2016, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.

She was born May 30, 1940, in Chicago, Ill., to Milton Richard Mellema and Evelyn Rupelt Mellema.

Kay was a woman of great faith, strength and generosity. She was a faithful member of Pine Valley United Methodist Church for 24 years. Kay loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and always was ready to share this love with everyone she came in contact with.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Wm. David Clayton of Wilmington, N.C.; four children, Cindy Poteat of Wilmington, N.C., Terry Barnhill of Burgaw, N.C., Tracy Mozingo of Green Bay Wis., and Mike Alward of Los Angeles, Calif.; grandchildren, Michele Klawitter of Fairlawn, Va., Lynn and Ryan Barnhill of Burgaw, N.C., Precious Poteat of Castle Hayne, N.C., and Nathan Mozingo of Madrid, Spain; one great-grandson, Jacob Klawitter; one sister, Gail Bradford of Dalton, Ga.; numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends; and her beloved dog, Buddy.

The family would like to thank the staff of Elderhaus Pace for the love, support and care they gave to Kay and her family through this difficult time.

A celebration of her life will be held at noon Thursday, July 28, 2016, at Pine Valley United Methodist Church, 3788 Shipyard Blvd., Wilmington N.C. A small reception will follow the service in the fellowship hall. Kay’s ashes will be spread in the mountains of Virginia.
