Betty Crawford Hughes, 57, of Burgaw, courageously fought a battle with scleroderma for the past six years . On Thursday evening, March 24, 2016, Betty was healed as she joined the angels in God’s heavenly kingdom.
She was born November 15, 1958, in Wilmington, the daughter of the late Wardell and Elva Grey Sellers Crawford.
Betty was a dispatcher for Pender County 911 Center as well as VitaLink. She was also an EMT with Pender EMS.
Betty was a giving, sharing, caring lady who loved her family beyond measure. Being a very intelligent lady, she believed in and stressed the importance of education for all. She always had a hand stretched out to help others, and a heart ready to show the love of Jesus within her. Betty will be dearly missed as a wife, mother, sister and friend.
Betty was a member of Herrings Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was instrumental in starting a food bank and bread ministry, initiated a Bible school for the children and participated in many other church activities.
Betty is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, Darrell D. Hughes; son, Randall D. ‘Randy’ Hughes; daughter, Ashley Hughes, and soon to be son-in-law, Brandon Huggins; sister, Mary Anne Black (Bill); brother, Leslie Crawford (Bonita); and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Visitation with the family will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 27, at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home, Burgaw. At other times, the family will be at the home of Brandon and Ashley. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 28, at Herrings Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. William Hill Pearsall and the Rev. Rick Russell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
