Dorothy ‘Dottie’ Bishop, 82, teaching was more than a career, it was a sacred trust

The life of Dorothy ‘Dottie’ Bishop, 82, ended on Wednesday, March 2, 2016, after a two-year struggle with multiple myeloma.

She was born the first of four daughters of Lewis Kelly Spivey and Claudia Estepp Spivey of Scott County, Va. She is survived by Gerald Arthur Bishop, her beloved husband of 58 years; her dear daughter, Deidre B. Armstrong and grandson, Brock Addington Armstrong. Other survivors include her sisters, Edina S. McConnell of High Point, Reba Emily Counts, Abington, Va., and Carole S. Edwards, and husband, Chuck, of Greenville. She also leaves five nephews and a remarkable niece.

Mrs. Bishop’s career as a teacher spanned four decades, beginning in 1955, throughout the state of Virginia, ending in 1999, with a decade at Cape Fear Academy in Wilmington. To her, teaching was more than a career; it was a sacred trust.

Respecting her wishes, the family will not plan a local service commemorating her passing. At a later time, there will be a simple graveside inurnment in Blacksburg, Va.
