James Wilson McCarthy, 62, known as a ‘sweet and generous man’

James Wilson McCarthy, 62, entered eternal life on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016 at his home in Wilmington.

He was born Sept. 15, 1953 in Montgomery, Alabama to John Francis McCarthy, Jr. and Marie Louise Corteal McCarthy, both of whom preceded him in death.

Jim was a graduate of Oakton High School in Fairfax County, Virginia in 1971, where he played varsity football, and in 1979 he received his Bachelor of Business Administration from George Washington University.

He was loved by many and known as a very sweet and generous man. Family members have great memories of his infectious smile and his loving spirit and he was best known for his passion for sports, especially the Washington Redskins and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Jim is survived by his brothers, John Francis McCarthy III, Joseph Lennard McCarthy (Becky) and Jeffrey Scott McCarthy (Lisa); his cousins, Jackie Barth Hansen (Rolf), Sherry Barth Pepock (Dan) and Robbie Barth (Kim); his niece, Kerry McCarthy Poinsett (Gary); his nephew John McCarthy; his great-niece, Hannah Marie Wagster; and his great-nephew, Jesse Austin Wagster.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 16.

The family asks that any contributions be made in Jim’s memory to the American Diabetes Association.
