Rev. S. L. Doty Jr. died Sunday, Aug. 23, 2015, at the age of 83.
He was pastor emeritus of First Baptist Church of Woodburn and was born in Winston-Salem on April 24, 1932, to Sidney L. Doty, Sr. and Ollie King Doty.
He grew up and went to school there before joining the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Hawaii when the Korean War broke out and was soon in the heat of battle. After being wounded he was sent back to the states to finish out his term.
He attended Fruitland Bible College and served as pastor of Battle Park Baptist Church. He served as mayor of both Kure Beach and of Leland.
On Dec. 24, 1953, he married Carolyn Snow. They had four children, Jennifer Thompson, John Charles, Sidney III and Chris (Tammy); six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015, at Andrews Market Street Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015, at First Baptist Church of Woodburn in Leland, with the Rev. Vic Potter and the Rev. Gary Boling officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to SECU Hospice of Bolivia.
