LELAND — The Leland Police Department is investigating a single-vehicle crash that killed a 78-year-old woman.
Just before 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, officers and other emergency crews responded to the area of U.S. 17 South near Collins Way for a reported vehicle that ran off the roadway into a field.
A passerby saw the vehicle and called 911 after finding Geraldine Harris, of Winnawbow, unresponsive behind the wheel. Leland Fire/Rescue arrived and began life-saving efforts, but Harris did not survive.
Police say the investigation shows the victim experienced a medical emergency while driving, which caused her to run off the road. Evidence at the scene suggests she died due to the medical episode rather than injuries from the crash.
No other vehicles were involved and there were no other injuries.
