Operation Firecracker has kicked off across the state and will continue through July 11, according to the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program.
The initiative is launched in collaboration with Booze It and Lose It during the Independence Day holiday. Law enforcement statewide will crack down on drunk drivers.
In 2020, during the three-day July 4 holiday, the state reported 127 crashes with 110 injuries and 10 fatalities. Around 10% of fatalities from drunk driving happen around holidays.
Officials encourage anyone who drinks to utilize designated drivers, cabs and ride-share services rather than operate a vehicle under the influence.
