WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH — The North Carolina Department of Transportation has paused work on rehabilitation of the South Banks Channel Bridge. According to a release from the NCDOT, extra repairs are needed and specialty components must be ordered to complete the job.

Until those arrive, which is expected to be in the next few weeks, all lanes will be open to traffic,” a release from the department noted.

The outside eastbound lane has been closed during construction but will reopen by the end of the weekend. Traffic will be able to utilize two lanes in each direction; however, there are temporary weight restrictions in place. Larger trucks are asked to use the northern bridge on Harbor Island.

“The contractor will restore higher weight capacity as part of these additional repairs,” the release continued.

Once crews resume work, a closure in the outside eastbound lane will be in effect. There will be two lanes of traffic open, heading eastbound toward the island, and one westbound.

Drivers should proceed through the work area with caution when crews are in the roadway.
