The N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program has kicked off a campaign to crack down on speeding motorists this week.
“Speed a Little, Lose a Lot” will step up law enforcement on highways through April 17 to ticket speedy drivers. The campaign’s aim is to provide for safer travel conditions.
“Over the past few years, North Carolina has seen an alarming uptick in speed-related crashes,” Mark Ezzell, director of the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program, said in a press release.
The department reports over the last five years, speed-related fatalities increased 17%; 424 people died in 2021.
“As the weather warms and vacation season approaches, let’s all do our parts to keep each other safe and avoid tragedy on our roadways,” Ezzell added in the release.
The department noted that a car traveling over 65 miles per hour is five times as likely to crash as one going below 40 miles per hour. “It takes just 49 seconds longer to travel two miles at 45 miles per hour than it does if you’re going 65,” the release explained.
