WILMINGTON – After handing out 800 trees two weeks ago, the Alliance of Cape Fear Trees is hosting another giveaway this weekend.

Locals can score free trees on Saturday, Mar. 12, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. The alliance — in partnership with Arbor Day Foundation’s Community Tree Recovery program and insurance company SageSure — will give away nearly 1,700 trees, rain or shine. The event will take place in the Legion Stadium parking lot, 2149 Carolina Beach Rd.

The trees are being distributed in 3- and 5-gallon sizes, and will help renourish the tree canopy across Wilmington that has been defaced by natural events. The City of Wilmington will also give away tree seedlings and mulch to residents who bring their own containers.

This event is the seventh and largest tree giveaway hosted by the Alliance for Cape Fear Trees and the Arbor Day Foundation. Trees and specific species are available on a first-come. first-serve basis, with a limit of two trees per person. Native species include American Elm, Armstrong Maple, Blackgum, Brandywine Maple, and more.

The nonprofit Alliance for Cape Fear Trees (ACFT) aims to improve and preserve forestry in the area. It has planted over 3,000 trees throughout the city and distributed another 6,000 young trees to residents since the start of the organization seven years ago.

Volunteer and meeting information can be found at allianceforcapefeartrees.com. The ACFT also has social media profiles on LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram.
