BRUNSWICK COUNTY — Around 3,000 to 5,000 gallons of untreated wastewater reached a tributary of Cartwheel Branch near the Cape Fear River basin, according to Brunswick County Public Utilities.
The spill took place after a 4-inch sewer main in Navassa, near 10480 Royster Rd., was struck by a utility contractor Monday around 5:30 p.m. County staff arrived by 6:35 p.m. to investigate the failure, and isolated the sewer main by 8:30 p.m., according to a release from public utilities.
“Staff utilized vacuum trucks to recover considerable volume of the discharged waste and lime stabilized the affected site,” the release noted.
By 10 p.m., the repair was completed.
