CFPUA suggests customers protect pipes ahead of overnight cold snap

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority released a reminder for customers to prepare their home and commercial space plumbing and irrigation systems to prevent freezing ahead of wintry temperatures overnight.

The National Weather Service’s Wilmington is forecasting temperatures from Friday, Jan. 7, into Saturday, Jan. 8, to be below freezing, dropping into the mid-20s.

“To help prevent pipes from bursting, drain water from outdoor plumbing and wrap pipes, or allow a trickle of water to run through the system,” CFPUA stated in a release.

Indoor plumbing can be protected also by dripping faucets. Opening kitchen and bathroom cabinets will allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.

CFPUA also advised customers to temporarily shut off irrigation and drain systems. It suggests protecting backflow preventers on irrigation and drain systems with a fiberglass cover, close valves, and drain the water from the assembly.

“All commercial business water customers and homes with irrigation systems have backflow preventers, which keep irrigation water from contaminating the public water supply,” CFPUA stated.
