BRUNSWICK COUNTY –– A Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office detention officer has been fired after taking an image of a male inmate in their underwear and uploading it to an online inmate list.
The sheriff’s office announced the decision Wednesday.
“We want to assure our community, this is not acceptable and violates not only agency policy, but our core values as well,” the office wrote in a Facebook post. “Inmates, regardless of who they are or why they are being detained in our detention facility are to be treated with respect and dignity.”
The office has policies in place to prevent this type of incident but “unfortunately that policy was not followed.”
The sheriff’s office apologized to the inmate and his family for any embarrassment the image may have caused.
