WILMINGTON — Close to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Wilmington Police Officers were called to Stewart Circle to address an assault on a female, who was hit with a closed fist as she held a small child. The assailant, suspected 27-year-old Shaquann Lamar Shuford from Riegelwood, grabbed the victim’s phone but she managed to escape the vehicle; Shuford then fled.
According to a release, officers from both WPD and New Hanover Sheriff’s Office, assigned to the housing task force, found Shuford at the intersection of Emory and N. 30th streets. He was walking around holding a handgun, prompting police to halt traffic on N. 30th Street at the railroad tracks and southbound; they also closed off Emory and N. 30th streets.
Additional units arrived and found the suspect was “sitting on the ground spinning in circles with the handgun in his hand.” Law enforcement instructed Shuford to drop the gun, which he eventually obliged. Though he was still within reach of the weapon, officers were able to negotiate and de-escalate the situation, according to the release.
Shuford surrendered, was arrested, and has been charged with common law robbery, assault on a female, going armed to terror of people, and child abuse.
He is currently being held at the NHCSO detention center without bond.
