UNCW is preparing to open the doors of its vaccination clinic. The university pushed hard to procure approvals through state channels, allowing its student health center to administer the shot. Records show that UNCW will receive doses this week for the first time.
Onboarding additional vaccine providers in North Carolina was a slow process upon the initial arrival of doses back in December and January, but as N.C.’s overall supply increased in recent weeks, more clinics and facilities have joined the effort.
This week more than 237,000 first doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine will arrive in N.C., along with 11,500 doses of the one-shot Johnson and Johnson vaccine. There are now eight registered vaccine providers in New Hanover County.
According to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, UNCW will receive 300 doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine this week. It will be up to the university to schedule and administer the shots.

“The clinic will operate in Burney Center by appointment only, will initially serve the UNCW campus community and may expand its mission in the future,” the university previously announced.
In a Tuesday news release, the university said: “The Student Health Center will be notified each week whether UNCW will receive vaccines. Upon confirmation, we will send a registration email for people to make an appointment using SignUp Genius.”
University professors and student employees became eligible for the vaccine earlier in March. University students who live on campus or in other congregate settings will become eligible April 7.
“Vaccines will be given in the Burney Center,” according to the university. “It will be necessary to wait in place for 15 minutes after receiving the vaccination. Vaccination cards will be given for updating records.”
According to an internal email sent from a NCDPS official, regarding the decision to move forward with planning a vaccination clinic on UNCW’s campus: “It is the goal of the vaccination planning team to ensure that the UNCW clinic be as self-sufficient as possible with no impacts to the local governments.”
