Sheriff deputies’ attempt to serve warrant ends in chase and multiple-vehicle crash

WILMINGTON — On Jan. 15 around 10:30 a.m., Cody Rayburn fled a Market St. hotel, when New Hanover County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to serve him a felony warrant. Rayburn hopped in his SUV and sped off, after hitting two deputies vehicles.

Deputies with vice narcotics followed Rayburn, who then crossed a concrete median on Market St. and struck a northbound SUV head-on. The deputies rear-ended Rayburn’s SUV as well. Victims Rayburn hit head-on were transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center but are in stable condition.

Rayburn was arrested with multiple felony warrants, including meth, assault with a deadly weapon as well as felony flee to elude.
