PENDER COUNTY — Customers expecting paper utility bills to be mailed in Pender County may experience delays. The company the county worked with on its mailings suddenly shuttered on Friday and didn’t give county officials a head’s up.

Pender County has worked with Professional Mail Services Inc. for 15 years and according to staff they informed the county on May 9 these services would come to a halt.

“They sent an email saying they closed their doors Friday,” county spokesperson Brandi Cobb wrote in an email. “Pender County Utilities did not receive any prior notice.”

The email indicated a new company is taking over.

“This isn’t the outcome that we’ve been working towards,” PMSI manager Tony Giuli wrote to the county. “Some of our intellectual assets have been acquired by Revspring, which will allow them to quickly process your files and take over printing and mailing services.”

The closure is affecting other utility companies in the state, including in Raleigh and the Town of Batesburg-Leesville.

Pender County said customers can still pay their bills online as the county adjusts to transferring services to its new vendor.

Port City Daily asked Cobb if this would relieve customers of late fees or disconnections for the time being but did not receive an answer by press; this will be updated upon response.

“This has understandably caused frustration for our customers, and resolving the issue is a top priority,” according to Pender County Utilities staff, who remain steadfast at restoring normal operations, Cobb said.
