WILMINGTON — The Eastern North Carolina Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association has formed a local New Hanover County Caregiver Support Group for family, friends and caregivers who care for someone living with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.
Meetings will be held on the second Monday of each month at The Commons at Brightmore, 2320 S. 41st St. The meeting time is 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with lunch provided.
The first meeting will take place May 13 and will include a special kickoff by discussing 10 tips during late stage caregiving, including changes in the caregiving role, monitoring care and planning end-of-life.
Alzheimer’s Association support groups are conducted by trained facilitators. They are aimed at allowing participants to develop a support system and exchange practical information on challenges and possible solutions. The groups also allow opportunity to talk through issues and discuss ways of coping and share feelings of needs and concerns. Group members also learn about community resources that can help them in their caregiving role.
“The demands of being an Alzheimer’s caregiver are all-encompassing and increase over time as the disease progresses, ” said Katherine L. Lambert, Alzheimer’s Association, Regional Leader for NC, SC & GA. “No one should face Alzheimer’s alone. We are grateful to The Commons at Brightmore for helping bring this important aspect of caregiver support to the New Hanover County community.”
It is estimated that in New Hanover County, there is an 11% Alzheimer’s disease prevalence rate in their age 65 and older population. This equates to an estimated 4,900 individuals in the county.
