OAK ISLAND — A small beach town in Brunswick County has new a face doing double duties for the island.
The Town of Oak Island has hired its current finance director, Kathryn Adams, to also take up the task of assistant town manager. The current town manager, David Kelly — who is stepping down this summer to retire — informed council during a closed session Tuesday.
Council unanimously supported the move; the position was approved as part of the current fiscal year budget. Adams has worked as finance director for six months, hired in August 2023. In her new role, she will oversee standard daily operations, and development and implementation of goals, policies, and procedures.
As assistant town manager, Adams also will step in the stead of town manager in the event of an emergency or if the manager is unavailable to perform duties. This will be pivotal in the transition to a new town manager, as council begins the selection process.
“Kathryn’s skills, experience, and familiarity with the Town, will be key asset to ensuring rapid integration for the selected candidate,” a town press release stated.
Adams also will retain oversight of the finance department; however, the position change will create a new accounting manager position, advertised at a later date.
