WILMINGTON — Teachers in New Hanover County Schools have been honored by a local service-centered club.

Five area educators were selected by a committee of colleagues for the Wilmington Rotary Club’s “Rookie Teachers of the Year.” The top honor received $1,000 cash and a trophy, with runners up receiving $500 cash.

The nominees in 2024 included:

  • Devin Pierce, special-education teacher at The International School at Gregory
  • Melissa Lawrence, pre-school teacher at Johnson Pre-K Center
  • Maggie Sellers, fifth grade teachers at Snipes Academy of Arts and Design
  • Sarah Wood, special-education teacher at Codington Elementary
  • Breylin Young, eighth-grade teacher English at Trask Middle School

Pierce was the top honoree, as presented by New Hanover County Schools Superintendent Charles Foust, also a Rotary Club member.

In cooperation with Rotary’s awards program, the school district operates a “Beginning Teacher Support Program” to inspire and promote leadership among new educators. That includes more than 300 teachers with less than three years of full-time classroom experience. The goal is to encourage support in a challenging and demanding profession.
