NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Two people were taken to the hospital following a house fire early Friday morning.
New Hanover County Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire at 470 Biscayne Drive around 7:30 a.m. Upon arrival, heavy fire and smoke were apparent, as reported by engine 16, the first to arrive on scene.
Fire trucks attacked the structured both internally and externally, as the home was located in an area without a nearby fire hydrant. Five tankers from New Hanover and Pender County fire departments carried water from the upper Bayshore area to the scene.
According to a press release, the fire was in both the attic and first floor of the house. Duke Energy disconnected power and the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office shut down traffic.
Also assisting to the responding units were stations 11, 14, 17 and 18, along with engine 9 from the City of Wilmington. The city department also provided a second engine to cover station 16 while units were handling the fire.
It took an hour to get the fire under controlled. Extensive overhaul had to be completed before units cleared the scene at 11:15 a.m.
Two elderly individuals were transported to Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center, with one suffering smoke inhalation and signed hair; the other was for precautionary measures. The Red Cross is assisting the family with temporary housing.
New Hanover County Fire Marshal’s Office is currently investigated the cause of the fire.
