PENDER COUNTY — More than 4,000 residents living in Pender County may experience no or low water pressure as of Wednesday.
Households connected to Pender County Utilities, except those in Hampstead, could face a water shortage due to a main line rupture on U.S. 421, discovered at 3 a.m. The damaged pipe is one that feeds water from the west side to all of Pender County.
Periods of low or no pressure in the distribution system increases the potential for back siphonage and introduction of bacteria into the water system. Customers in the area are advised to boil all water used for human consumption or use bottled water until the advisory is lifted.
Vigorous boiling for at least one minute should kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water.
The advisory is expected to be in effect for at least 24 hours. Testing after that time will determine if the water is safe or if the boil advisory remains in place.
Crews are working currently to restore service and some water flow has been established from other sources. Service will be returned completely once the water main is repaired.
