BRUNSWICK COUNTY — One lucky woman won the first top prize in a new lottery scratch-off game this week. With it, she plans to finally make a dream purchase.

Wendy Hester of Leland bought a $10 VIP Platinum ticket from Fairhaven Mini Mart on Walker Street and won $1 million.

“This is a dream,” Hester said in a press release. “We can finally get our home.”

Hester said something told her to buy a ticket: “It was just meant to be, I think.”

When she took the ticket home and started scratching, she was surprised to uncover the lucky win. Hester said she contacted her husband immediately, as soon as she realized it was true.

She arrived at lottery headquarters Thursday to pick up her winnings and had a choice to make: receive $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000.

Hester chose the bulk amount, and after federal and state tax withholdings took home $427,503. She said in addition to buying a house, she’s going to pay off her car as well.

“This is a godsend,” Hester said in the release. “We really needed this.”

The VIP Platinum game debuted this month with five $1 million prizes. Four of the top winnings remain to be claimed.
