WILMINGTON — A fire that started in a unit at James Walker Apartment complex Tuesday left five residents displaced and two seeking treatment at the hospital.
Rebekah Thurston with the Wilmington Fire Department said crews were on the scene at 5:30 p.m. at 1020 Rankin Dr. Firefighters contained the fire to the apartment of origin; however, smoke did permeate the building, Thurston said.
WFD escorted 12 other residents out of the building as well as a dog.
“One resident and one firefighter were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” she said.
“We did pull two people out the ladder on the second floor, which was the fire floor,” she said.
The fire was extinguished before 7 p.m. and some residents were able to return to their homes. Thurston said the American Red Cross is helping the displaced.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
