NEW HANOVER COUNTY –– Eugene Ashley High School went under lockdown Friday morning, as did two other campuses located in Veterans Park, Anderson Elementary and Murray Middle schools.
A New Hanover County Schools spokesperson confirmed the lockdown to Port City Daily at approximately 10:15 a.m.
Ashley High emailed families just after 10 a.m.: “Ashley High School was placed on lockdown by law enforcement agencies as a precautionary measure. All students are safe and accounted for. We will be in touch with our families when we have additional information.”
The lockdown occurred as New Hanover’s top county, school and law enforcement officials were in a meeting at the government center discussing safety improvements on campuses. The work session began at 9 a.m.
New Hanover County Schools notified media at 10:58 a.m. that the lockdown had been lifted for all campuses. A spokesperson said the precaution was taken due to a threatening social media post that was being investigated by law enforcement.
Lt. Jerry Brewer of the New Hanover Sheriff’s Office said the post implicated a shooting was going to happen but surmised the post may have originated from Durham.
Three weeks ago, on Aug. 30, New Hanover High was placed on lockdown after a 15-year-old allegedly fired shots in the school’s crowded catwalk during a fight. One student was injured and faces non-life threatening injuries. Several other campuses were placed on lockdown or shelter-in-place following the incident.
