Plans for a car wash (not retail or office space) next to Lidl submitted

WILMINGTON — Though it’s become somewhat of a punchline locally, it’s true: Wilmington will soon welcome yet another car wash.

The preponderance of carwashes and storage facilities is frequently highlighted in local community groups (as seen on the banner of a satirical Facebook page that parodies the city).

Even so, there may still be demand for more of these services in the growing region.

Splash n Dash submitted plans to the City of Wilmington last week for a 4,375 square foot car wash off Eastwood Road. The project will be located adjacent to Lidl, with internal access provided via the grocery store’s existing entrance on Eastwood Road. It is being developed by SND Mayfaire LLC.

The 3.5-acre parcel was previously part of a property rezoned from residential to commercial as part of Lidl’s approval before it was subdivided. In June, council approved rezoning the parcel to permit the construction of the car wash. Had the rezoning not been approved, the property would be limited to a two-story 20,400-square-foot office and retail building.

In seeking approval for Lidl, developers “used an educated guess” for the portion of the site that will soon host a car wash, requesting space for the retail and office building.

The project will introduce 36,993 square feet of impervious surface area, or 0.85 acres. A total of 1.65 acres of the 3.5-acre site will be disturbed by the development, according to site plans.
