BALD HEAD ISLAND — Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced Bald Head Island would receive up to $3 million to cover beach renourishment efforts in a press release Tuesday.

The combination of state and federal funds will cover expenses incurred by the Village of Bald Head Island after Hurricane Florence eroded the community’s beaches.

FEMA will cover 75% of the total project cost, with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety picking up the remaining amount, totaling more than $2.9 million, according to the release.

Funds will be used to replenish Bald Head Island beaches with more than 215,000 cubic yards of sand.

Federal and state agencies have awarded North Carolina beach communities more than $109 million combined for beach restoration efforts. Besides the Village of Bald Head Island, Emerald Isle, Holden Beach, Indian Beach, Pine Knoll Shores, and Topsail Beach have also been approved for beach renourishment projects.
