NEW HANOVER COUNTY — A man wanted for what authorities call multiple ‘heinous’ crimes was shot and killed on Tuesday in New Hanover County.
“The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office in partnership with the FBI were searching for a violent suspect wanted out of Charlotte NC and Myrtle Beach SC for heinous crimes including kidnapping, carjacking at gunpoint, and armed robbery. Information was received that the suspect Kyle Horton, known to be armed and dangerous, was possibly headed to the Wilmington NC area,” according to a press release from the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident happened at Briarcliff Villas off Harris Road in northern New Hanover County.
“Detectives attempted to apprehend Horton who drew a firearm on the Detectives. Horton was shot and killed during the confrontation with Detectives. None of your New Hanover County Deputies were injured in the incident. Sheriff Ed McMahon has requested the NC SBI take over the investigation,” the release concluded.
According to state records, Horton has spent years in prison for felony convictions including drug dealing, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted armed robbery, and more. Horton was apparently released from his probation program earlier this month.
