NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Results from this year’s election have not yet been certified, but already the 2020 local races are heating up.
Official filing for the 2020 county and state elections begins Monday, December 2 and runs through Friday, December 20. But the region has already seen several incumbents and challengers for state representative offices announce their candidacy.
On Thursday, teacher Chris Meek announced he will run for the New Hanover County Board of Education.
Meek has been an active teacher for 25 years, and taught at Williston Middle School from 2001 to 2008 and Charles P. Murray Middle School from 2008 to 2014. Meek said he wanted to pursue teaching in a high school, and recently accepted an offer to teach in Onslow County; he commutes to teach at Northside High School in Onslow County, but still resides in Wilmington.
“New Hanover County Schools has great students, caring parents and excellent educators. What it has been missing, but is slowly building, is an effective board of education to take it to the next level. My addition to the board will add the final piece of the puzzle for New Hanover County Schools to be the beacon of educational excellence in North Carolina,” Meek said.
In his free time, Meek said he runs the Wilmington Officials Association, “a sports organization that supplies officials for baseball, softball, soccer, and volleyball to local leagues and middle schools.” Meek has also served in numerous leadership positions in the North Carolina Association of Educators including most recently, Regional Director for Region 7B.
