In two months, pedestrian, cyclist killed attempting to cross Carolina Beach Road

NEW HANOVER COUNTY — A 60-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed after attempting to cross Carolina Beach Road near the Circle K Saturday evening.

In a release, the State Highway Patrol said the pedestrian failed to yield to the right of way and was struck in the southbound travel lanes by a 2015 Ford Taurus.

The pedestrian was attempting to cross Carolina Beach Road from the Circle K on Myrtle Grove Road to a mobile home park across the highway, according to a State Highway Patrol investigation.

After being transported to the hospital, the pedestrian, Brian Caithness, later died from his injuries.

The fatal collision occurred at 10:32 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21.

About 4.5-miles further north on Carolina Beach Road, a 67-year-old bicyclist died in a hit-and-run collision on Saturday, July 27, at 11:25 p.m.

Sheila Faircloth, the bicyclist, was attempting to cross Carolina Beach Road from Silver Lake Road. Faircloth was struck by a vehicle and died at the scene. Richard Sean Lesink was later charged with felony hit and run, driving while his license was suspended, and operating a vehicle with a revoked registration for an insurance violation.
