Hampstead man shot in chest, Raleigh resident charged with attempted murder

HAMPSTEAD — Over the weekend, Hampstead resident Jerry Carol Capps, 68, was found with a gunshot wound to his chest after a reported dispute with Raleigh resident Joseph Cleveland McGee, 67.

On Saturday afternoon, Surf City Police units first arrived at a residence on Buds Lane in Hampstead six minutes after a report of a person shot, according to PCSO Captain Billy Sanders.

This was an ongoing dispute between victim and suspect,” Sanders said.

PCSO deputies then arrived and found Capps with a gunshot wound to the left side of his chest. He was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. Sanders did not comment on his current condition.

Raleigh resident Joseph Cleveland McGee, 67, was arrested for one count of attempted murder and is currently being held in the Pender County Jail under a $250,000 bond.
