Update 7 p.m. – Pender County spokeswoman Tammy Proctor later clarified that about twelve residences were threatened, but not damaged, by the fire. Contrary to earlier statements from the county, an evacuation was issued but later rescinded. NC Forestry continues to monitor the area.
PENDER COUNTY — A serious fire, covering at least 10 acres near Holly Shelter Game Land, is under control after being battled by local and state agencies.
The fire, near the Pinnacle Parkway in the Holly Shelter Game Land north of U.S. 17, was dealt with by Pender County firefighters as well as tractors and several airborne units from the North Carolina Forestry Service.
According to Pender County spokesperson Tammy Proctor, “it’s a brush fire that started in the game lands.”
Proctor said there was no threat to residential areas and no calls or plans for evacuations.
Units from New Hanover County are also assisting, although they are not directly combating the blaze.
According to New Hanover County Deputy Fire Chief Frank Meyer, “we have one engine standing by while [Pender County] are the ones fighting the fire. Their units are tied up fighting the fire so New Hanover County is there to help out for other incidents.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
