Fatal Friday-night shooting is Wilmington’s second gang-related homicide this year

The second Wilmington homicide of 2019 took place just over a month, and only several blocks, from the first, the shooting of Zalleux Johnson, Jr.

WILMINGTON — Authorities are investigating the death of a man in the Creekwood South, the result of a gang-related shooting late Friday night.

According to the Wilmington Police Department (WPD), “Officers responded to the 1000 block of Emory Street around 10:30 pm in reference to a ShotSpotter notification of multiple rounds fired. Upon arrival, officers located the victim. EMS transported him to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.”

The shooting death, the second homicide in Wilmington this year, takes place just blocks from where Zalleux Johnson, Jr. was gunned down on February 21. In the wake of Johnson’s murder, WPD Chief Ralph Evangelous pleaded with the community to refrain from retaliation.

It is not yet known if last night’s shooting was related to the Johnson murder. According to WPD, there is no additional information available at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
