Police Department locate missing girl with autism using Project Lifesaver technology

The technology can make a crucial difference in locating people who deal with cognitive issues like Alzheimers or autism.

WILMINGTON—This morning the Wilmington Police Department reunited a 7-year-old with her family after she went missing from her home sometime last night.

According to police, the child’s father alerted them at about 7:30 a.m. that his daughter, who is non-verbal and deals with autism, was missing.

The Wilmington Police Department and New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office dispatched units to find the girl.

Because she had a Project Lifesaver tracking device, first responders were able to find her.

According to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Jennifer Dandron, the Project Lifesaver tracker looks similar to a watch.

“It uses radio frequency,” she said. “They wear it on their wrist and it transmits a radio signal.”

According to the police, Project Lifesaver aids in the search and rescue of vulnerable members of the community.

Wilmington Police and the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office urge family members to consider the devices for loved ones who have Alzheimer’s, dementia, down syndrome, autism or other brain related disorders that cause them to wander or to be difficult to locate.
