Spokesperson for the North Carolina Department of Transportation, Brian Rick, said the crews discovered groundwater while replacing a sewer line.
“While crews were attempting to replace the nearly 12’ deep 16” gravity sewer line and manholes at the corner of Kerr and Market, extensive groundwater was encountered requiring installation of a well pointing system at the manhole and then across Kerr Ave to facilitate the installation of the sewer line,” Rick wrote in an email.
Though no exact end date is set, Rick said crews are expected to work around the clock.
“Crews intend to work day and night, weather permitting, to complete the system and re-open Kerr Avenue,” he said.
According to a tweet by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, traffic will be redirected to the Wilmington Avenue extension.
