LELAND — Port City Outdoors in Leland has officially opened and owners Joe Cellucci and his Wife Melissa say they have a little bit of something for everyone.

While Port City Outdoors will provide a range of camping, survival equipment, and other emergency equipment, the Cellucci’s are also offering a range of fresh coffees, hoping to fill what they see as a void in the market.

With both Joe and Melissa having law enforcement experience, and Joe currently working full-time as a critical care flight paramedic, survival training is in their blood. With five children, finding a suitable job for Melissa was limited and Port City Outdoors was the right fit, Joe Cellucci said.

The Cellucci’s owned their own businesses in the past, when they lived in Michigan. After Three years of living in this region, they decided it was time to open a store in Leland.

Although there are outdoor stores in the region, Leland in particular was lacking a store that could provide the selection the Cellucci’s are bringing to the area, according to the Celluccis. Joe Cellucci said he will also offer live bait and other fishing necessities.

“We kind of looked at the area and felt what the need was,” Joe said. “Yes, you have the big box stores across the river in Wilmington which is very difficult to get to … Walmart has a good selection but not nearly the all of the avenues that we have … We have outdoors equipment, we have EMS, fire, and police supplies … we can design our own shirts and do screen printing.”

The store also offers a unique opportunity for local vendors to sell handcrafted goods to customers. Joe Cellucci said he also plans on offering life-saving classes to anyone interested.

“With my background, we’re going to go back into teaching CPR, first aid, stop the bleed, and emergency type classes,” Joe Cellucci said.

A caffeine emergency

Most outdoors shops do not also double as a coffee shop, but after realizing the need for quality coffee in the area, the Cellucci’s decided to have Port City Outdoors do just that.

“Were excited, we wanted originally to do a coffee shop, we were always interested in that,” Melissa Cellucci said. “We thought there is nowhere to get coffee around here, so we said ‘why not have coffee here too’ so we looked into it and found a place that serves decent coffee, better than your average gas station coffee … It’s something different so you can have your coffee while you shop.”

For now, Joe said he does not plan on carrying guns and ammunition, but he is able to order ammo as special orders and will do so if requested. He also plans on providing shooting equipment but, as of now, he does not carry any firearms.

“At this point in time we’re not a gun shop. There’s a lot of responsibility with that nowadays and I don’t want to be known as a gun shop … not that I don’t have access, I have friends that have their Federal Firearms License (FFL) that we can set them up. Ammunition is going to be on an individual basis, and I will special order it,” Joe said.

The store will also offer a chance for consignment sales of quality, used outdoor equipment Joe Cellucci said. Instead of going through the trouble of trying to buy and sell used gear online, and meet unknown people in unknown locations, for a small fee, Port City Outdoors will offer their storefront for customers.

Port City Outdoors is located at 1725-6 Reed Road, Leland, in the Food Lion shopping center.  You can also find them on Facebook.
