WILMINGTON — Wilmington Police believe two shootings off Airlie Road this weekend may be related, although charges have only been issued in one.

A speed limit sign on Airlie Road was shot almost a dozen times over the weekend (11 times, to be exact). The Wilmington Police Department has no ShotSpotter devices in the area, so it’s not clear how many total shots were fired or exactly when the shooting occurred. However, the bullet holes appeared between Saturday and Monday morning.

Police believe the Airlie Road shooting is related to another one, a block away, where Garrett Grinnell opened fire on his neighbor. (Port City Daily photo | BENJAMIN SCHACHTMAN)

According to Wilmington Police Department Linda Rawley-Thompson, the Airlie Road shooting is believed by officers to be related to another shooting just around the bend in the road, on Edgewater Lane.

That’s where Garrett Grinnell, 21, opened fire on his neighbor’s house. Grinnell, who’s family lives on Edgewater Lane, admitted to police that he was intoxicated on a combination of marijuana and unidentified “pills” when he discharged a firearm, striking a nearby house and a truck. Grinnell would later tell police he acted out of anger over a “heated argument” he’d had with the neighbor, several weeks earlier.

While firing at his neighbor’s property, Grinnell claims he somehow shot his own pinky off. Grinnell had himself taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center to treat his bullet wound.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, Grinnell was charged with “discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling, damage to personal property and discharging a firearm within city limits,” for the incident on Edgewater Lane.

Grinnell received an unsecured bond of $75,000; as opposed to a secured bond, that wouldn’t require Grinnell to put up any money, only a formal promise to pay the bond amount if the conditions of his release are violated.

No charges have been made for the shooting on Airlie Road.
