WILMINGTON — A voluntary recall of a variety of biscuit products hit 12 states this week, including North Carolina.
The T. Marzetti Company is recalling numerous brands of biscuits, out of concern for potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recall was enacted in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
All “Best by” dates of the following 15 product are being recalled in the Wilmington area (as well as throughout the region):
- Shur Fine Old Fashioned, Southern Style, and Buttermilk Biscuits
- Food Lion brand Homestyle and Buttermilk Biscuits
- Food Club Southern Style and Buttermilk Biscuits
- Lowe’s Foods Brand Southern Style and Buttermilk Biscuits
- Marshall’s Old Fashioned and Southern Style Biscuits
- Laura Lynn Southern Style and Buttermilk Biscuits
- Southern Home Southern Style and Buttermilk Biscuits
According to the FDA, the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
According to the T. Marzetti company, these products are “not ready-to-eat items and (have) baking instructions which, if followed, will reduce consumer risk, there remains some risk that the mishandling of this product prior to or without adequate baking may cause illness.”
According to the FDA, no illnesses have been reported related to this issue.
