WILMINGTON — The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority is updating its plan to distribute GenX-free water.

On Thursday, the CFPUA announced that water from its underground aquifer sources had been tested on July 13, revealing no GenX. The CFPUA offered to distribute finished water from these sources for free from a location in Ogden Park.

On Friday evening the CFPUA announced it would work with the City of Wilmington to designate churches in Wilmington as potential “water delivery sites.” Dylan Lee, spokesman for the City of Wilmington, clarified that the city was using “minister” and “church” in a broad sense, including a wide range of religious establishments and leaders.

In a release, the CFPUA said that “interested citizens will be able to drop off clean, empty containers at a participating church. Containers must have caps, be clean and properly-labeled with full name and phone number.  Containers should be limited to between one and five gallons in size.”

According to the CFPUA, the city is working with area ministers but has not yet finalized a list of locations. Once the locations are finalized, residents will be able to drop off their water containers, CFPUA staff will take them to Ogden to be filled, and return them to be picked up.

The City of Wilmington plans to release information about locations and schedules next week.
