WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH — A local bar has opened early and is offering “appropriate” drink specials in honor of today’s testimony by former FBI Director James Comey.
Jimmy Gilleece, owner of Jimmy’s at Red Dogs, posted a notice on Facebook on Wednesday, announcing that “Every time Trump tweets about Comey I’ll be buying a round of drinks.” The bar will also be serving half-price Russian vodka drinks and shots, a nod to the allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
Inspired by a D.C. area bar that is reportedly giving away free beer whenever President Donald Trump tweets about Comey’s testimony, the event at Red Dogs cannot give away free beer (because of state alcohol laws). They will be giving away free doughnuts, according to Gilleece.
Bartender James Aperfine opened the bar at 9 a.m. Thursday morning. He had national coverage of the hearing playing on the bar’s televisions with the sound amplified through the sound system. Aperfine said he was looking forward to Comey’s testimony – and the patrons’ reactions.
“Who doesn’t like politics and Russian vodka first thing in the morning? I mean, nothing says fun like politics and booze before noon,” Aperfine said. “Once things gets going, I can’t wait to see how people react once Trump starts tweeting. It should be good.”
