PGA TOUR greats Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott commit to Wells Fargo Championship

WILMINGTON — Tournament officials announced Thursday commitments from two of golf’s greatest players, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott, for the Wells Fargo Championship scheduled for May at Eagle Point Golf Club.

Mickelson, the World Golf Hall of Fame member and winner of 42 career PGA TOUR titles, will be competing in his 14th Wells Fargo Championship. The five-time major championship winner holds the tournament record for the most top-10 finishes,  with nine. These include a third-place finish in both 2007 and 2013, a runner-up finish in 2010 and back-to-back fourth place finishes in both 2015 and 2016. Mickelson also holds the tournament record for most consecutive 36-hole cuts made with 13.

Scott, who became the first Australian to win the Masters Tournament with his 2013 victory in Augusta, has won 13 times on the PGA TOUR and 13 times in International competition, including two World Golf Championships. This will be Scott’s ninth start at the Wells Fargo Championship. His best finishes are a third-place finish in 2006, a T8 in 2008 and a T17 last year.

“We are delighted that both of these great players will be joining us as we celebrate our 15th anniversary in Wilmington this year,” Wells Fargo Championship Executive Director Kym Hougham said. “Each of them has supported our tournament throughout the years and I know that both of them really want to add the Wells Fargo Championship to their list of career titles.

“With the addition of Phil and Adam, and the early commitments, we announced at our media day, we are off to an excellent start in the player commitment process. I encourage fans to get their tickets soon. They do not want to miss what certainly will be an entertaining competition and a wonderful social event here in Wilmington.”

Currently, Scott is ranked No. 8 in the Official World Golf Rankings and Mickelson is 19th. Earlier this week, tournament officials announced an initial list of play commitments during a “Media Day” on site alongside North Carolina native Webb Simpson. Simpson spent part of his summers as a kid playing golf in Wilmington.

The tournament will take place May 1-7. Players have until Friday, April 28 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time to commit to the Wells Fargo Championship and can withdraw from the tournament at any time. A list of current player commitments can be found on the tournament’s website
