WILMINGTON — Two Laney High School ROTC seniors were recently nominated by U.S. House Representative David Rouzer for appointment to U.S. Military Service Academies.
Chase Verzaal, commander of the Laney High School Air Force ROTC, and Charles Broder, deputy commander of the Laney High School Air Force ROTC, were honored at a reception recently held at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Chase Verzaal has been nominated for an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy, and Charles Broder has been nominated for an appointment to U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
Both students are still awaiting acceptance from the respective academies, but the honor of being nominated is commendable. There were 80 applicants competing for 10 nominations in the 7th Congressional District of North Carolina. The nominations of Chase Verzaal and Charles Border speaks volumes to the Air Force ROTC program at Laney High School.
“It’s an honor to nominate some of the best and brightest students of Southeastern North Carolina to attend a United States Service Academy, where they will receive a first-rate undergraduate education and have the opportunity to give back to our nation by serving on active duty as a military officer,” Rouzer said.
The honor of attending a service academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation.
Members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY; the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, MD; the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado Springs, CO; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, NY.
The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), New London, Conn., does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.
