WILMINGTON — A morning shelter at West Brunswick High School has been lifted after law enforcement responded to two unrelated incidents on campus.
This morning, 16-year-old Kavon Kenith Gause, a West Brunswick High School student, was arrested and taken to the Brunswick County Detention Facility after an unloaded firearm was found in his book bag, according to Brunswick County Schools’ Spokeswoman Jessica Swencki.
A tip from a community member led school resource officers and administration to the student, Swencki said.
Gause, of Supply, faces on felony charge of having a gun on educational property for allegedly having a 9 mm Smith and Wesson hand gun at West Brunswick, according to the arrest warrant.
Additionally, a rumor about a potential threat to the campus had caused West Brunswick High School to shelter in place. School resource officers and administrators had become aware of the rumor on Monday, Feb. 13. The threat was investigated and the student was removed in accordance with the Brunswick County Schools’ “Code of Conduct.”
The campus sheltered in place today was “based on a communication from the student this morning,” Swencki said.
The shelter in place was lifted at about 10:40 a.m. Friday. Swencki said the students were under a shelter in place for about 15 minutes and are safe.
Another student was placed in custody and transported to the Brunswick County Detention Facility, after allegedly providing false information to law enforcement and school officials, which prompted the campus to shelter in place earlier today, Swencki said.
“Societal issues, family issues, and mental health issues all land squarely on the front steps of our schools. Now more than ever our students and communities are playing an active role in helping keep our schools safe and secure by alerting schools official when they have information,” Swencki said. “Keeping our schools safe is a team effort. We commend our school resource offices and school staff for their quick response today.”
Additional information will be released by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office as it become available.
