Melody Davis, missing Wilmington woman, found dead inside vehicle

WILMINGTON — Troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol are investigating a body located inside a vehicle off U.S. 74/76. Wilmington police have confirmed the body is that of 42-year-old Melody Davis, a woman who went missing from the area one week ago Monday.

According to Highway Patrol 1st Sgt. Troy Pope, a passerby located the body of a female inside a Subaru on the side of westbound U.S. 74/76 near Mt. Misery Road, and contacted 911. Highway patrol received notification of the vehicle at about 11:30 a.m. Monday, and responded to the scene.

The body was later determined to be that of Davis, Pope said. Investigators with Highway Patrol suspect the Davis had been involved in a single-vehicle collision. The vehicle she was in reportedly ran off the road to the right, and then struck a small tree.

“We’re Looking into all factors surrounding the collision,” Pope said of the ongoing investigation.

Davis went missing from the Wilmington area on Monday, Jan. 9, according to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay. She was last seen in the 200 block of Oak Leaf Drive at about 5:30 p.m.

Highway patrol is continuing its investigation into the incident and will release further details at a later time, Pope said.
