State soccer playoffs: No. 2 New Hanover rolls, late goals lift Ashley, Laney grabs OT thriller

After the opening round of the state playoffs on Saturday, three local teams extended their season by at least one more game as New Hanover, Ashley and Laney picked up results.

First-round playoff matchups

4A Tournament

  • No. 2 New Hanover 4 No. 15 Fuquay-Varina 0

The Wildcats erupted for four goals in their first-round match against No. 15 Fuquay-Varina as second-seeded New Hanover rolled to a 4-nil shutout at Legion Stadium.

Moss Lewis tallied twice in the result, while Paul Horning and Carson Powell found the scoring sheet. Jesse Wyatt had three assists for the Wildcats, who improved to 17-3-1 overall.

New Hanover hosts No. 10 seed Raleigh-Sanderson after they defeated No. 7 Panther Creek, 2-1. Round two will be played at Legion Stadium on Tuesday, Nov. 8th @ 7 p.m

  • No. 7 Ashley 2 No. 10 Riverside-Durham 0

Jacob Reeves and Josh Chapman each found the back of the net in the final 10 minutes of the second half to propel No. 7 Ashley 2-0 against No. 10 Riverside-Durham.

The Screaming Eagles moved to 12-4-2 overall. Reeves send in a bending blast inside the right post with less than eight minutes to play in regulation, while Chapman buried a free kick from 20 yards out for the insurance goal.

No. 7 Ashley was also granted a second-round home contest after No. 15 Enloe grabbed an upset 1-0 win over No. 2 seed Leesville Road.

No. 13 Laney is no stranger to winning postseason games on the road and the Bucs did just that on Saturday night in a 3-2 overtime result at No. 4 Durham-Jordan.

Laney improved to 12-8-2 and head to No. 5 D.H. Conley in round two on Tuesday.
