Brunswick County Friday night joined New Hanover County in calling off School on Monday to assess the damage done by Hurricane Matthew.
The decision by Brunswick County to close school to staff and students on Monday, Oct. 10, was announced after 8 p.m. The cancellations could be extended.
According to a release from New Hanover Schools Spokeswoman Valita Quattlebaum, the extra day is needed to examine the impact Hurricane Matthew could have on schools.
“The closing of schools on Monday will allow the district to conduct damage assessments to ensure safety,” the release stated. “In addition to damage assessments, the district will need time to clean up any debris or repair any damages caused by the storm.”
Two of the district’s schools, Trask Middle School and Johnson Pre-K Center, will be used as shelters this weekend during the storm.
