WILMINGTON — This Saturday will be your chance to celebrate marine science and take a tour of Wilmington’s marine research facility. The University of North Carolina – Wilmington is hosting an open house and “Outdoor Science Carnival” from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at university’s CREST Research Park, 5600 Marvin K. Moss Lane, in the Masonboro area of Wilmington.
Adults and children alike can go on a guided tour and take part in activities and demonstrations at the event. Two-hour tours of the Center for Marine Science, the Shellfish Research Hatchery and the MARBIONC marine biotechnology facility begin at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. Tour slots are limited, and registration is available on the open house website.
Among the tour stops are the oceanography lab, including a remote-instrument demonstration, the shellfish labs and other research laboratories. In addition to the guided tour, the new interactive virtual tour of the center will run continually on a screen in the lobby of the facility. The virtual tour also can be viewed online at any time.
“UNCW and CMS are integral to southeastern North Carolina and the coastal community,” Martin Posey, director of the Center for Marine Science, said. “We want the public to learn more about what we do, about our ongoing projects and how we are contributing to the region.”

More than 20 booths will be set up at the science carnival featuring interactive demonstrations involving research and educational programs such as MarineQuest.
Parking is limited. Additional parking and shuttle service will be available at The Home Depot Garden Center, 5511 Carolina Beach Road in Monkey Junction.
