You may have noticed the hashtag that’s showing up heavily on Social Media today: #VoterRegistrationDay. Or maybe you have been approached by people with clipboards when you are out and about in the greater Wilmington area. According to the group behind the effort, HeadCount, it’s all about getting people registered to vote in the upcoming Presidential Election.
The reason for today’s social media push is simple, Tuesday, Sept. 27 is National Voter Registration Day, according to Margery Ellis, Wilmington team leader for HeadCount.
According to Ellis, HeadCount helped launch National Voter Registration Day in 2012 and it has registered more than 50,000 new voters on that day over the past two years.

The deadline to register in North Carolina to vote in the upcoming election is Friday, Oct. 14. According to the North Carolina State Board of Elections, to register in North Carolina you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Must have resided at the address you are registering from for at least 30 days.
- Must be 18 years old to vote, or 16 years old to register with the understanding that you may not vote until you turn 18.
- Must not be serving a sentence for a felony conviction (including probation or on parole).
- Must rescind any previous registration in another county or state.
