The annual “Stuff the Bus” event is underway to help provide school supplies to students in need in New Hanover and Pender counties.
Sponsored by Communities in Schools of Cape Fear, the event is held every year on the first weekend in August, when the state lifts taxes on school supplies for back-to-school shopping. As they enter stores, customers will be asked if they’d like to buy a few supplies during their shopping trip and drop them off as they leave.
This year, volunteers will collecting items from Friday, Aug. 5, until Sunday, Aug. 7. Buses will be parked at the Walmarts in Porters Neck, Monkey Junction and Burgaw as well at Office Depot on Oleander Drive and Harris Teeter at Mayfaire Town Center. Donations will also be collected at the Regal Cinemas theater in Mayfair Town Center.
The list of needed supplies include pens, pencils, crayons, rulers, notebooks, binders, backpacks and uniform clothes, along with many more. The donations will be delivered to counselors and social workers at each of the public schools in New Hanover and Pender Counties, where they will be distributed as needed throughout the year.
Communities in Schools of Cape Fear, a chapter of a national dropout prevention organization that provides support and other resources to students from kindergarten through 12th grade, collected and distributed over $60,000 of supplies as a result of the 2015 Stuff the Bus event.
