Update 5:15 p.m.–The “Six” shoot behind International Paper planned for Tuesday has been canceled, according to Tammy Skinner, who handles film permits filed with the City of Wilmington. The shoot was for a fight scene involving prop gunfire. Skinner said production crews might reschedule in the future.
A new seafood joint and an iconic downtown landmark are among the set locations this week for a locally filmed television series.
While crews with the Navy SEALs show “Six” get ready to shoot a fight scene in a private wooded area Tuesday, TNT’s “Good Behavior” is filming today (Monday) at Carolina Fish Fry, which opened up shop at 4019 Market St. last month. Crews are also filming all day along the Sixth Street Bridge.
That bridge is already a recognizable structure to many small screen viewers, having been featured in the opening sequence of the CW teen drama, “One Tree Hill,” which was filmed in and around the Port City from 2003-2012. Having now reached a cult following, of sorts, the bridge is oft visited by “OTH” tourists hoping to get a firsthand look at the real sites used to create the fictional town of Tree Hill.
A hefty crew of 80 will set up around the bridge to shoot a “minor fender bender” involving four “Good Behavior” actors and 10 extras. Set in North Carolina, the suspenseful show stars Michelle Dockery of “Downton Abbey.” It’s based off Blake Crouch’s bestselling Letty Dobesh book series. Fresh out of prison, Dobesh (Dockery), a thief and con artist, finds herself entangled in a hired hitman’s plan to kill another man’s wife.
During filming, which runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., there will be limited access to Sixth Street between Red Cross and Harnett, as well as along Campbell, Bladen and Brunswick streets between Fifth and Seventh. Residents and guests will have access as needed, and the closures will be in place only when needed for the shoot. Ten Wilmington police officers will be onsite to help direct traffic.
Meanwhile, filming for another car scene got underway at 6 a.m. today at Carolina Fish Fry. The permit for that location lists an “exterior car drive through scene” at the eatery that involves two actors and another 10 extras. They’ll be on set until 11 tonight.
The setup won’t require any road closures, although there will be some intermittent traffic control on Princess Place Drive between Barclay Hills and Birchwood from 6 to 7:30 a.m. and possibly again from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., if necessary. That traffic control can be conducted only in two- to three-minute intervals during the rush hour times of 7:30 to 9 a.m.
The yellow crew signs—a familiar sight to Wilmingtonians at the height of the area’s film industry—are once again popping up all over the Port City, as “Good Behavior” and “Six” continue their shoots simultaneously.
The latter – a fictional History channel show inspired by real US Navy SEALs missions – stars “True Blood” and “Magic Mike” actor Joe Manganiello as Rip Taggart, a hardened former squad leader of SEAL Team 6 who, at the show’s start, is working to protect a small African village from Boko Haram.
According to a permit for that show, a special effects crew will be on hand at the end of JR Kennedy Drive behind International Paper from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday to safely oversee an “attack on a school.” The scene will involve 12 cast members and 40 extras, many of who will have prop guns. Simulated gunfire will be used during filming and while there will be 12 semi-automatic weapons on set, those weapons will not eject projectiles and will not produce sparks, and no pyrotechnics will be used.
